I personally took this photo in Taman Sri Endah. Bumi are those people who were living here for a long time, the rest are those who immigrated to Malaysia from centuries ago until today, mainly Chinese and Indians.

Helping students gain understanding and self-confidence in algebra

Now we are in 2013 and election will be held in less than 3 days. It’s been a while that crime rates are keep raising and unfortunately I was a victim too on April 11th. My case wasn’t that bad, it’s included at the end of this post. After that sharing the story with my friends, they told me that they had similar issue about 4 years ago, but apparently it’s happening again. few days later, on 16th April, my classmate was nervous and he explained what happened to him in the morning, again! Same place, different timing, different person. So what we can say is that particular passageway-like sidewalk is a hunting spot. But the story does not ends for these similar cases. Lots of facebook groups and pages are created recently to alert and inform people about incidents, how to prevent and discuss about possible solutions. The one I found few days later was “Malaysian Crime Awareness Campaign” and as you can see, this page is created in July 2012.

There are couple of reasons as answer, but I’m not going to get my hands dirty of judging the government and society that are not belong to me; but I’d like to have an another post about races and racism in Malaysia as my observations.

And here’s my story − the last bus from school to train station is at 19:15. There is a walking distance from train station to my house, so I was walking back home in business suit (as university rules − shirt and tie were light purple), that 4 Malay teenager passed beside me and I could feel their edgy behaviour, but I decided to continue my way and not paying attention to them, probably that increased their motivation to make a fight or rob my stuff; so they changed their route and followed me for awhile, I noticed that a minute earlier before they reach me, one of them yelled once. Here is the clash. The one taller than me, came in front of me walking same route, but suddenly stopped and grabbed my tie, the other was right behind me, I could tell how young they were. All I had in my hands was an umbrella and my bag (incl. mobile phone, wallet, etc.). I found myself being beaten in the face and my bag is being pulled by one of them, then I started to stab the taller champ with my umbrella so he would let me go, I also was shouting loud as I can that “HELP!” but people were watching only. The whole clash was slowly moving till reaching somewhere that everyone could see us, I could see their fists punching me in the face, my umbrella was smashed to pieces, that was when they gave up and continued their way like nothing happened. Fortunately my bag (worths more than 300 USD including everything) was with me and I was so stressed and angry. Then I went to police station to make a report which has its own story, but they said they couldn’t do much.

They question is why don’t they have policemen walking in streets? It’s a shame to say this, but so far, their patrols are very good to stop bikes and cars to make some money, yeah bribery. Do not overestimate a country by their towers or quality of the main city, go and see their courts, prisons, police stations and finally read their rules. I’ve made a huge mistake on this part.

The entire incident was a shock to me, police and university’s reactions were another shock. After explaining in details that what happened to me and my friend, the university’s secretary plus another person (who is in charge of student visas and immigration) told us to “be more careful”, “they only want 40 to 50 ringgits (~$15) to buy drugs for themselves”, or “buy a pepper spray to defend yourself”. They even didn’t accept my absence letter for the next day!

I’ve a lot to say about living in Malaysia, but let’s not forget this fact that this country is very nice to plan for holidays, talking to people and trying variety of hundreds of foods. Overall I enjoy living in here
